Many of you have known Jennifer longer than I, but I knew the day that I met her that Jennifer and I would be great friends. We grew up with the same values, we align on just about every issue and we share the same snarky sensibility. She will always be my person.
When I spent time with her, I was at my most relaxed and most authentic, because she was the most authentic person I have ever known. She was comfortable in her own skin and she made everyone around her just as comfortable. She was the same person on a Monday at work as she was all dressed up at a fancy event as she was when she and I drove around looking for that perfect photograph.
She will always be my person.
During a particularly difficult day for me after she died, I was struggling to get a handle on everything that has taken place. I happened to look down at my phone and I saw this staring back at me:
“You and I will meet again,
When we’re least expecting it
One day in some far off place
I will recognize your face
I won’t say goodbye my friend
For you and I will meet again.”
It was as if Jennifer was texting me, something we did often. She was looking out for me just like she always did, putting me at ease, just like she always did.
Since Jennifer was so gracious to send me that very needed message, I want to take a moment to send one to her to remind her what she meant to me:
“You are the finest,
loveliest,
tenderest,
and most beautiful person (friend)
I have ever known—
and even that is an understatement.”
—F. Scott Fitzgerald
I love you, Jennifer.
