Part Four

Cycle one, the first round of Jen’s chemotherapy is done!

Including all of the pre meds, pre and post hydration, today’s session took six hours.

Jen did really well. No complications or side effects so far.

We met with Dr. Sarma (during today’s second infusion) and learned that the damage to her hip is more extensive than we thought. Her right pelvis socket is not just fractured, it is fragmented.

The bone fragments explain the severe pain Jen feels when she puts any weight on that joint.

Jen will have surgery in mid August, to either scrape away the compromised bone or replace that part of her hip.

Dr. Sarma wants Jen to start five days of radiation treatments tomorrow (Tuesday).

The hope is radiation (and chemo) will stop or slow down the damage, and save Jen’s left hip.

Jen’s pain is the other challenge.

We met with Dr. Bias-Smith (Interventional pain management) this afternoon. He offered a couple of options including neurolysis, a pain intervention delivered by needle, similar to an epidural.

But he recommends a surgically implanted pump. Jen would control the pump with a cell phone-like remote that would effectively block the pain at the nerves. Giving her more control and reducing Jen’s need for oral pain meds.
