One Hip

Jen is fine. The surgery was challenging, but ultimately successful. Jen has a solid RIGHT hip (there’s a story)! Dr. Wodajo said Jen did very well, “she was stable. I mean she’s young and healthy. She just has a cancer problem.”

It was very bloody, “for the amount of bone destruction, it was appropriate. It was a bleeding challenge and a mechanical challenge.” Her pelvic socket was practically disintegrated.

The hope was to do the other hip tomorrow. But a second surgery this week is not doable, “not after 3 liters of blood loss.”

It will be two weeks before Jen can have the second hip done. Asked if there will be enough bone to work with then, Dr. Wodajo said, “The more bone lost, the harder it is to reconstruct. You can still get there. It’s not a question of can we do it. We have to try to get her a functioning hip.”

I asked how he felt about the results, “I’m happy in the end. The middle part was frustrating. We’re not done yet.”
